(Abstract)

 

The carbohydrates of glycoconjugates participate in important recognition events in the cell surface. We are studying the structure of the oligosaccharides and the biosynthesis of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchors in Trypanosoma cruzi. This is a first approach to a rational design of inhibitors of the biosynthesis of cellular components essential for the viability of the parasite.

-We are also studying the structure of the oligosaccharides in recombinant glycoproteins.

-In connection with the presence of galactofuranose in trypanosomatids, fungi and bacteria, and its absence in mammals we plan the synthesis of potential inhibitors of the enzymes beta-D-galactofuranosidase and galactofuranosyltransferase.

-We synthesize ligands for affinity chromatography, to be used in the isolation of receptors for galactofuranose, for example from the insect, vector of T. cruzi.

-Oligosaccharides, present in O-glycosidic linkages in mucins of T. cruzi, in which the presence of galactofuranose depends on the strain, are being synthesized. This synthetic oligosaccharides could be used for the identification of different strains, for immunologic assays and biosynthetic studies.
